It was the Brazilian press who broke the news last month saying Newcastle United were interested in signing manager Jorge Jesus.

Reports said the coach was the Magpies’ second option for the summer, as they still had Mauricio Pochettino as their priority.

Jorge Jesus has been negotiating a contract extension with Flamengo for the past few weeks, and now it seems he’s close to an agreement to stay in Brazil for a little longer.

Yahoo journalist Jorge Nicola says that due to the economic crisis, the boss isn’t getting a big salary rise, and has just received an offer to make €3.5m per year at the Rio de Janeiro side.

Regarding the chase from Europe, Jorge Nicola writes that the Coronavirus outbreak has ‘cooled down’ the interest from Benfica, Porto and Newcastle.

It’s said the Portuguese clubs don’t know if they will have the conditions to sign the manager, while Newcastle’s takeover still hasn’t had approval from the Premier League.

Since Jorge Jesus’ contract with Flamengo expires in June, he must take a decision quickly. Now if this interest from the Premier League really exists, we wouldn’t be surprised to see some kind of release clause in his new contract.
