Two months on from his sacking at Watford, Javi Gracia is yet to find himself a new job, either in England or abroad.
The Spaniard has been linked to plenty of jobs in Spain since his departure from Vicarage Road with reports suggesting he wanted to stay in England and prove himself there.
It seems, though, that Watford may also be the reason he hasn’t turned up at a new club just yet.
El Desmarque Vigo report today that the former Hornets boss was in contention for the Celta Vigo job, which has just gone to another ex-Watford manager, Óscar García.
The website explains Gracia still has to resolve ‘an important economic obstacle’ with Watford before he can sign for another team and that’s why he couldn’t go to Celta.
The Spanish club would have had to offer him a ‘great’ salary to make a move happen, something they weren’t willing to do.
And while it’s not explained what the obstacle with Watford is, it’s likely to be something to do with wages.
There’s been a growing trend in recent years of clubs agreeing to pay a percentage of manager’s wages until he gets a new job, as opposed to a severance package.
That not only saves the clubs paying the whole contract but can also reduce the compensation package as a whole, making it attractive.
Perhaps that is what has happened with Gracia in this instance, and the wage on offer from Watford is better than what Celta were offering this time around.
