Deciding to represent DR Congo instead of trying to fight his way into the France squad, for whom he played at U19 level, Arthur Masuaku won’t make his debut for the national team this international break.

Travelling with the squad to face Tanzania in an upcoming friendly, the 24-year-old has since returned to West Ham after seeing how badly organised the trip was and asking to leave.

He isn’t the only one to have done so, as Gael Kakuta (Amiens), José Mpoku (Standard Liège) and Jordan Ikoko (Guingamp) did the same, and all were granted permission to return to their respective clubs.

The Fecofa, DR Congo’s FA, released a statement on their website explaining the four players were given their return tickets after they ‘deplored certain aspects of the organisation’.

The players were said to be ‘frustrated’, with some having ‘broken, sulked and asked to leave’.

The Fecofa also explain the quartet are being held ‘accountable’ for their actions, and it is their understanding that, to the best of their knowledge, all of them have returned to Europe.

Not the start the West Ham defender will have wanted, that’s for sure.

Now the question is: will Masuaku be called up again in the future?
