We’ve covered the situation between Sébastien Pocognoli and West Bromwich Albion in the past, thinking the loan move to Brighton would be the end of it, but with a call-up to the Belgium national team, old memories have been brought back.
With Jordan Lukaku injured and Marouane Fellaini suspended, the left-back was called back to represent his country for the first time in around two years.
Left out by Marc Wilmots previously due to his lack of game time at West Brom, the defender spoke to DH about his phone call with Roberto Martinez, which happened on Saturday night.
Pocognoli revealed he was aware Martinez was keeping an eye on his performances, having been told by his Brighton manager, so the chat with the Spaniard about joining the group didn’t come as too much of a surprise.
Delighted to have been called up, he also explained how the call-up was a win for him, allowing him to put his recent West Brom nightmare behind him.
He said: “Two years ago, I was so happy because I was playing in the Premier League regularly, but a manager disrupted everything. This call-up, I take it like a reward, especially for my family who supported me when things weren’t going too well for me.”
