Despite all the random subjects surrounding Portugal’s national team just before the World Cup, we still get to see Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Matheus Nunes being highlighted in the local media.
Record today brings some quotes from former fullback João Pereira, who spoke to Agencia Lusa about some players who could stand out in Qatar.
Matheus Nunes is apparently one of them, with Pereira claiming the Wolves midfielder ‘could be a pleasant surprise’ for the national team at the World Cup.
“It’s irreverence, it’s what he’s looking for, he’s not afraid to assume responsibility, he’s not afraid to make mistakes and that’s also what the national team needs. Very much in the style of Renato Sanches. They are different players, but also with this irreverence of going up, who are young, have no pressure, it’s almost like playing in the neighbourhood.”
Signed by Wolves in a €45m transfer from Sporting this summer, Matheus Nunes had a quick adaptation to the Premier League, already having 15 appearances for the Molineux side, despite a shoulder injury which left him out for a couple of games.
The midfielder, however, isn’t used to getting so much playing time with Portugal, and is more likely to be a bench option for manager Fernando Santos during the World Cup.
