Loris Karius and Taiwo Awoniyi are heading back to Liverpool, with Union Berlin announcing on Monday that the pair, who were in Germany on loan deals from the Reds, are part of a group of players leaving the club.
Karius, who turns 28-years-of-age next month, moved to Berlin after a mixed period on loan in Turkey with Besiktas. He managed to make four appearances in the Bundesliga and a further one in the DFB Pokal, with his last minutes coming all the way back in February.
It seems unlikely that Union Berlin will make an effort to keep the player on a longer term basis, which presents questions for both Liverpool and Karius. Given his contract expires in June 2022, this summer will surely see the Merseyside club look to make some money.
Awoniyi has made 22 appearances this season, and it would have been more had the 23-year-old not picked up a muscle injury in February. He scored five goals and added four assists, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Union, or another German club, look to take him on loan next season.
