On June 3rd, we relayed news from Belgium that ‘it’s uncertain’ whether Jan Vertonghen will continue at Tottenham Hotspur beyond this month.
The centre-back’s current deal at the club expires on June 30th.
With the current season extended until July, José Mourinho has already expressed his desire to retain the 33-year-old until the end of this campaign.
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the defender has until Tuesday to sign a short-term extension and if he fails to do so, he can leave Spurs as a free agent after this month.
The Belgian was expected to leave the Premier League in the coming window, and it’s now possible he’ll go sooner than expected.
Tottenham have one more fixture in June, which will be against West Ham United on Tuesday. HLN are of the belief it could be Vertonghen’s his last for the English side.
The report further adds the player is not short of suitors as AS Roma have included him in their target list, if they fail to retain Chris Smalling, who is on loan from Manchester United.
Vertonghen is also being studied by other clubs in Italy, while he has been offered to ‘several teams’ in Spain.
