When José Mourinho arrived at Tottenham to replace Mauricio Pochettino, he was not the only new appointment.
Mourinho brought a whole new team with him, as several of Pochettino’s backroom staff needed replacing and the Portuguese boss attempted to freshen things up for himself and the club.
The one signing they did not make was a director of football, despite it heavily suggested that one would be incoming.
There were several rumours that man would be Lille’s Luis Campos, who worked with Mourinho at Real Madrid and could reforge that relationship at Tottenham.
L’Equipe report that the Lyon chief has been ‘offered’ jobs in Europe in ‘recent months’ and one of them was at Spurs.
It’s explained that Maurice, who is currently head of recruitment at the French club, is facing an uncertain future after the arrival of Juninho as sporting director.
The Brazilian has taken up much of the work that Maurice has been doing for several years, so much so that the pair are now in ‘a form of rivalry’ with their relationship described as ‘far from harmonious’.
And while he signed a new deal last summer, on improved wages, it has become clear that his future at the club is not as certain as it once was.
As a result, several clubs have all been keeping a close eye on him, including Tottenham, who made an approach that was presumably rejected.
Nonetheless, the interest is there and should the situation worsen for him; Spurs may do well to make a move again to finally get the director of football they’ve long wanted.
