It is “quite logical” that Tottenham are showing an interest in SG Union defender Koki Machida, with a move away from the Belgian club seemingly getting closer.
That’s according to former Club Brugge striker turned analyst Gert Verheyen and Voetbal Nieuws, who both cover the player today.
Tottenham are believed to be keen on Machida, with several reports over the past few weeks crediting them with an interest in him.
The belief is that they will look to strengthen their defence in the January transfer window, particularly if Eric Dier secures a move elsewhere, as has been mooted for several months as he’s struggled for game time under Ange Postecoglou.
Machida has been touted as a possible target; a rumour fuelled by Postecoglou’s history of developing Japanese talent at Celtic.
In the meantime, he continues to impress for Union and did so again at the weekend in the win over AA Ghent, a performance which prompted praise from Verheyen.
“That is normal. Not so much that it is Tottenham, but that there is interest in him. That is quite logical,” he said on the transfer rumours around the player.
VN then go one further, explaining that with Union set to take on Liverpool in the Europa League in the coming weeks, there is every chance that Tottenham will have scouts at the game to put Machida ‘in the spotlight’.
They believe that if he does well against the Reds then a move to the Premier League, or another top competition ‘seems to be getting closer’.
