Before moving to Atlético Madrid, Southampton and eventually his current side, Tottenham, Toby Alderweireld played for Ajax in the Eredivisie, a club he joined from Beerschot when he was just 15 years of age.

As tends to be the case when these transfers happen, the defender was placed in a host family, who lodged him and took care of him since he was away from his relatives, who had stayed in Belgium.

Speaking to Veronica Inside and relayed by Voetbal Primeur, Tom Mechelse and his wife revealed they hoped the 29-year-old would return to Holland in the future, partly due to his current situation at Tottenham.

He said: “We had Toby Alderweireld in the house for four and a half years, and he doesn’t feel comfortable at Tottenham. Then I think: maybe he’ll come this way again, because he hasn’t signed a new deal yet, he doesn’t want to sign. His salary will go down at Spurs.

“We are in contact with his parents. I’ve had his mother on the phone.”

Joking they were ‘working’ on getting Alderweireld back to the Netherlands, they also made it clear how nice a boy the Tottenham defender was.

As things stand, the former Atlético Madrid centre-back’s contract with Spurs is due to run out next summer, but the Premier League side have an option to trigger an extra year in his deal, at which point a release clause will reportedly become active.
