The uncertainty around Ronald Koeman’s future ended on Thursday after Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed the Dutchman will continue at the club next season.
Koeman has come out victorious and the latest decision from the La Liga side could cause a ‘domino effect’ on the squad, reports Mundo Deprotivo.
The 58-year-old didn’t count on some players last season and those players must now seek a new club, if they want more playing time.
Barcelona have ‘recommended’ Miralem Pjanić to look for a way out, especially with them set to bring Georginio Wijnaldum. The Bosnian has a market in England and Italy, and he could used in an exchange deal.
Junior Firpo was hoping Koeman’s arrival last summer would change his fortunes, but that didn’t happen and he’s now aware his future is away from the Spanish club. The left-back could either be sold or used in a swap deal.
Matheus Fernandes struggled the most as he made one appearance last season. The 22-year-old had earlier suggested the manager has something personal against him and considering these two factors, he should be looking at the exit door.
Samuel Umtiti’s injuries since the 2018 World Cup have caused concerns at Barca and the Frenchman has been repeatedly told to find a new club. Despite being reluctant to leave, the defender’s exit could be ‘inevitable’ in the summer.
Riqui Puig is a player appreciated by the club’s board, but not by Koeman. Mundo state the former Everton manager ‘has given or will give his opinion’ on the player.
Francisco Trincão is another player who didn’t enjoy regular minutes, but he did ‘have a certain confidence’ and he has an option to continue at Barcelona, even though there are many options in the attacking division next season.
Koeman admirers Sergi Roberto’s versatility and his commitment, but his contract expires in 2020 and Barca’s management have no plans to offer him an extension.
His high salary and ‘overbooking’ in the midfield could see Barca sell the Spaniard. The manager’s ‘pressure will be decisive’, state Mundo.
With seven players who could change clubs, the Roberto case could lead to some controversy because Koeman wants to retain him, while Barca have other plans for the 29-year-old.
