It’s been widely reported that Manchester United will bring in at least one new midfielder this summer and for several weeks, Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong has been named as their main target.

The La Liga side are open to letting the 25-year-old leave the Camp Nou, and to do that, they are demanding €100m, which the Red Devils are refusing to meet.

When mentioning the €100m figure it’s essential to say there’s been multiple claims from the Catalan media regarding the asking price, with it going up and down every few days.

On Wednesday, Sport stated Manchester United have been trying to lower the fee to €70m fixed fee plus €10m in variables. However, the Catalan club want the fixed fee to be at least €80m, with easily achievable bonuses.

These claims are relayed again in today’s edition of the same newspaper, who then give more details on this case. Their title reads: ‘United still do not give up on De Jong’.

The Netherlands international played the full 90 minutes in his country’s 3-2 UEFA Nations League win over Wales on Tuesday. After the tie, he was quizzed about the reports linking him to Erik ten Hag’s side.

“You always like that as a player, that teams are interested in you, but right now I’m in the biggest club in the world. I feel good at Barca, so there is no news,” he said.

The player’s comments don’t mean there will be a change in his situation in the coming days and weeks. That’s because United don’t plan to throw the towel so soon for this deal.

Sport state Ten Hag ‘continues to press’ the United leaders to ‘make an effort’ to secure De Jong’s services as the Barca player is the ‘absolute priority’ for the ex-Ajax manager.
