In what would be a sensational return, Yann M’Vila is in talks to head back to Sunderland to give Michael Beale a boost, according to Foot Mercato,

The defensive midfielder has never stopped talking about how much he enjoyed his first spell at the Stadium of Light ever since he left, and he appears to be getting a second chance after being a free agent for most of the first half of the season.

Foot Mercato report that Sunderland ‘want’ the midfielder to sign for them, and have made signing the 33-year-old their ‘priority’ this January.

It’s explained that the Black Cats already wanted him in the summer, but clearly never managed to get a deal over the line.

However, discussions ‘started again’ this winter to make his wish a reality, and it appears it’s heading in the right direction.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, journalist Santi Aouna also adds that ‘contact took place in recent days’ with M’Vila’s agents.

Whether he does get his desired return to Sunderland remains to be seen, but it’s clear both parties want this to happen, and when that is the case, a common ground is normally found.

During his first spell at the Stadium of Light, M’Vila made 40 appearances in all competitions, scored one goal and assisted another five.
