If there’s one player Chelsea could end up buying this January, it’s Lille’s Thiago Mendes.

We say this because it’s been widely reported, repeated once again by RMC Sport, the Blues made an enquiry for the player back in the summer, when Maurizio Sarri was looking around to bolster his midfield.

Nothing came of it, but January could present the perfect time for Chelsea to make a move, as Lille could be in need of selling, and they’d much rather offload the Brazilian than Nicolas Pépé.

RMC Sport claim an offer of that magnitude would help them avoid any DNCG imposed transfer restrictions in the upcoming window and would allow them to keep hold of their other stars.

The only issue here for the Blues, and this was pointed out by France Football last week, is that he falls in Paris Saint-Germain’s budget of €30m for a new midfielder, even if he doesn’t quite fit the out and out defensive midfielder bill.

We’ll have to wait and see if the interest is renewed in the coming weeks, but the knowledge that Lille are open to a sale should prick up a few ears at Stamford Bridge.
