Leeds United’s inclusion of ‘tricky bonuses’ was part of the reason they couldn’t secure a deal for PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo.
The Whites made a late bid for the PSV winger, who had been the subject of transfer rumours throughout the window after an impressive campaign last season.
He had initially been linked with a move to Manchester United, but they did not push forward with their interest, instead sealing a big money move for Ajax’s Antony.
It was instead the likes of Southampton and Leeds who made moves at the end of the window, with the latter even sending owner Victor Orta to the Netherlands to try and secure a deal.
That was ultimately something he wasn’t able to do, and director of football Marcel Brands has since explained why, detailing that Leeds’ offer only included €2m of bonuses they considered achievable.
Voetbal Primeur now add to that, explaining that the €13m of additions they offered were in ‘tricky bonuses’. It was this which led to PSV’s rejection.
They’ve since sacked their technical director John de Jong as a result of the issues that arose at the end of the window, with him coming in for criticism for his decisions, but analyst Kenneth Perez doesn’t agree with that.
“I wouldn’t have agreed to that either,” he is quoted as saying to ESPN.
“But you have to be financially sound. You can use the money in another way, for two other positions. That will still make you stronger.”
