Manchester United’s hunt for a new striker in January proved to be one of the tales of the transfer window.
After missing out on Erling Haaland, then losing Marcus Rashford to injury, United went on a mad dash over the final days to try and find someone to fill the gap.
Numerous strikers were linked with a move to Old Trafford, before, eventually, there was the last-minute capture of Odion Ighalo.
One man they reportedly tried to get was Fedor Smolov, who has just joined Celta Vigo on loan from Lokomotiv Moscow until the end of the season.
According to Faro de Vigo, the Spanish side weren’t the only ones who were keen, with them claiming that Manchester United also bid for the Russian international.
Unfortunately for them, he turned down the opportunity, preferring instead to join Celta and play in La Liga.
Now, this claim comes in a piece covering how excited Smolov is to join Celta, in which he makes plenty of claims about how big the club are and so forth, so there’s every chance his agent has dropped this in to help his client.
After all, what better way to make your new fans love you than the idea you turned down Manchester United to be there?
If that isn’t the case, name dropping United is no new trick from this agent, who has linked his client to the Premier League on numerous times in the past.
