Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg is looking less likely to join Ajax this summer amid interest from the Premier League.
The Danish midfielder is in the final year of his deal at St Mary’s and has so far failed to reach an agreement on an extension.
That has already seen him stripped of the club captaincy by Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhüttl, who has also left him out of the starting line up amid the doubts about his future.
Several Premier League teams have all been linked with making a move, chief among them Everton and Tottenham, who are both keen to improve their respective midfields this summer.
And according to journalist Freek Jansen, who covers Ajax for Voetbal International, all the current indications are that the Southampton midfielder won’t be joining the Dutch giants.
“I do have the feeling that it’s getting a bit less and less,” he told VI.
“It was concrete in the sense that Ajax often looked at him and was enthusiastic.
“He has played 32 international matches for Denmark and has years of experience in the Bundesliga and Premier League.
“This is also a strong force you could bring in, a type of defensive midfielder where Ajax could use some reinforcement.
“I understand from several quarters that his preference is for a longer stay in England.
“If you have to compete with these clubs, as Ajax you know it’s going to be difficult to get him. Ajax finds him very interesting, wants to take him to Amsterdam as well.”
