Alexandre Mendy and his entourage have been trying all summer to convince SM Caen into letting the player leave and join Sunderland.

The striker, who was top scorer in Ligue 2 last season, and his representatives have gone public on multiple occasions with their frustrations that he hasn’t been allowed to sign for the Championship club yet.

There’s been claims of Caen going against their word, and a verbal agreement that they’d let Mendy leave this summer for a reasonable amount.

The Ligue 2 club have stood firm until now, but Mendy’s camp have made it crystal clear they’ll fight until the last hours of the window to secure a move to Sunderland.

There may now be a little reason to build some fresh optimism.

On Tuesday lunchtime, Caen announced the signing of Kalifa Coulibaly… who is a striker. He scored 12 goals in 30 Ligue 2 matches last season and under SM Caen’s announcement on X, it’s clear fans think he’s Mendy’s replacement.

Indeed, that’s an obvious conclusion to make, and this may signal some hope for Sunderland and the player who wants to join them the most.
