Sheffield Wednesday have been linked with former Arsenal centre back Johan Djourou in the past week, but despite claims the Championship were in pole to land the Swiss international, he’ll be heading to Turkey.

The Owls were interested in Djourou and we covered reports from Italy last week they were ahead of Genoa in the race to sign the 30 year old.

German magazine Kicker have now reported Djourou has signed a contract with Turkish first division side Antalyaspor, where he’ll be playing alongside Samuel Eto’o.  According to Kicker, the player has agreed to a two year contract, with an option of another season.

This is will come as a blow to Sheffield Wednesday, who were keen to bring in Djourou this summer. The defender had turned down a move to Serie A, and seemed destined for a move to Hillsborough. Sheffield Wednesday will now have to look elsewhere if they want to bring in an experienced defender.

Djourou experienced a tough spell at Hamburg, especially last season. In November, Hamburg’s coach Markus Gisdol stripped him of the captaincy and handed it to Gotuku Sakai, and then the club refused to sell him during the January transfer window.

In the second part of the season, he wasn’t playing regularly and eventually ended up in the club’s U21 team.
