Giovanni van Bronckhorst has insisted he sees similarities between Rangers and new club Besiktas.

The Dutch manager has been speaking to De Telegraaf about the Turkish club, who confirmed him as their new manager this week.

Van Bronckhorst has been out of work since leaving Rangers in November 2022 after a 68-game spell in charge at Ibrox.

He was manager at the club between November 2021 and November 2022, enjoying a points per game ratio of 2.01 and taking them to the Europa League final.

The Dutchman was sacked later that year, though, with Rangers nine points adrift of Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race and the worst group stage performance in the history of the Champions League.

He’s now returning to work for the first time since his departure from Ibrox, taking up the job at Besiktas, who had been searching for a new manager after sacking Fernando Santos in April.

The manager is keen to get to work at the Turkish giants and admits he can see similarities between them and his former club Rangers.

“A lot has happened in the past year and a half, but I only wanted to talk if I really liked something and got energy from it,” he said.

“Besiktas is such a club in every respect. A large following, a great stadium and in a city where they are very football crazy.

“This is really the type of club that I have always been involved with. That is also what I like about it. Feyenoord, Rangers FC, Arsenal, Barcelona, all clubs with the same image and culture. They play at the top and for the prizes.”
