Sunday’s edition of Marca covers Saturday’s Matthijs de Ligt claims, and then adds a bit of their own.
To recap, on May 25th it was claimed the Ajax defender is now ‘very close’ to a Manchester United move.
RAC1, a Catalan radio station, explained the offer from Old Trafford was too good to turn down.
Their well known journalist Gerard Romero also tweeted it, saying: ‘De Ligt very close to United! Not definitive but very good proposal for the player’
It was reasonable to assume the claims had come from a Barcelona source, and then the next assumption would be this is what Mino Raiola has told the club.
Whether the agent did so because it’s the truth, or just used it as a tool to crank up the pressure, is of course completely unknown.
Marca go over what was claimed, and then state: ‘The central defender, as MARCA has learned, has already made his entourage aware that he seems determined to accept the offer despite the fact that Solskjaer’s side are not going to play the Champions League.’
Clearly, they present this as their own information.
With regards to reliability, the journalist doesn’t have a big background of football or Barca claims to check, mainly focusing on cycling. He’s based in Madrid.
Over in the Netherlands, they’ve largely left the whole thing alone, with De Telegraaf not covering the transfer at all over the past week.
De Ligt has spoken himself, telling Dutch channel NOS, via Ajax Showtime: “I look for where I can best develop. A lot is being written, but that has been the case throughout the year. I have no problem with that. I won’t let it drive me crazy.”
