Ajax defender Jurrien Timber has admitted he could leave the club this summer, after Jaap Stam told him to join Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

The Ajax star has been speaking to Ziggo Sport’s Kick ‘t Met, relayed by Voetbal Primeur, about his plans for the summer, when it seems likely he will be targeted by big clubs in Europe once again.

He was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United last summer, when it was believed Ten Hag was keen to take him with him to Old Trafford as part of his rebuild at the club.

That move never ended up happening, with Timber remaining at Ajax to continue his development and continue to build his reputation as one of the rising stars of European football.

That has sparked suggestions that he will be targeted again, particularly by Manchester United, who remain keen to improve their defence.

Indeed, former Manchester United star Jaap Stam urged the defender to join United this summer, labelling them as the most logical option in England for the player.

And Timber admits the possibility of a transfer is there, although he would need certain factors to be met first.

“It’s the same situation for me as last season,” he said.

“When I say I’m leaving, it has to fit. Important is playing style, playing minutes… Competing for prizes is also important. My favourite country? I dare not say.

“That’s why I’m doing the same as last season. The chance is there, it can happen, but I’m also comfortable here. I’m still young and here everything also suits me. I’m going to watch quietly.”
