Ajax forward Steven Bergwijn has been labelled as ‘superfluous’ as he continues to struggle following his move from Tottenham in the summer.

The Dutch forward returned to his homeland in the summer window following months of speculation about a potential switch.

He had initially been targeted by Ajax in the January transfer window but Tottenham’s demands at that point stopped a deal from happening.

They eventually agreed this summer but, just as happened at Tottenham, the forward has been struggling to hit the heights expected of him.

He’s currently without a goal in a month, something he was questioned about ahead of Ajax’s clash with Napoli this evening.

“This is also part of football, it cannot always be an upward trend,” Ajax Report state him saying.

“Everyone has better phases and lesser phases. I just train hard every day; it will work itself out. At the moment it’s just not going the way it did at the start of the season, that has nothing to do with other players.

“It goes with peaks and troughs; you always have that in football. This is part of top sport.”

It seems, though, that some are unconvinced that things will ever improve for the Dutchman at this new club.

There’s plenty of criticism around Ajax at the moment following another summer of big departures and arrivals, including a new manager in Alfred Schreuder.

They’re yet to kick on under their new boss, with new signings such as Bergwijn failing to fill the shoes left behind by the big summer departures.

One who is certainly unimpressed is Aad de Mos, who has criticised the former Tottenham man and his fellow arrivals.

“I see that ‘Bassey case’ and that ‘Sánchez case’ as superfluous. And I also see Bergwijn as superfluous,” Soccer News report him saying.

“They (Antony and David Neres) immediately showed they were an added value for Ajax. And that’s clearly different now.

“They have brought in players from whom I can immediately see that they will never become Ajax players.”
