Unai Emery’s future at Paris Saint-Germain seems to be solely resting on what happens in the Champions League.
Fully expecting the team to win Ligue 1, the board are entirely focused on the European competition, and with the talent at their disposal, a win should be around the corner, even if it seems a bit precarious this time around, what with being 3-1 down to Real Madrid in the first knockout stage.
If they don’t win, the Spaniard, who is out of contract at the end of the season, is likely to depart, meaning a replacement will be needed, and that’s where Arsène Wenger comes in.
At least, that’s what Le10 Sport are reporting in their monthly magazine, claiming that Nasser Al-Khelaifi has ‘re-entered the fray’, asking the Arsenal manager if he would be interested in taking over in the French capital next season.
Considering his current situation at the Emirates, with Arsenal pretty much out of the battle for the top four, in their own little limbo in sixth, the Paris Saint-Germain president felt this was the best time to ask him again.
As for whether or not Wenger is interested in the job, that remains to be seen.
Ideally, like any man in the profession, the Frenchman would prefer to go out on a high, but if the season carries on as it currently is, regardless of his protests and adamancy he’s the right man to turn things around at Arsenal, he might not have a choice.
If it came to that, and with a desire to carry on managing at the top level, Wenger could very well land on his feet in Paris.
There’s a few ifs in there, but it’s not the craziest idea.
He can’t stay at Arsenal forever.
