Kasper Hjulmand’s decision to leave Celtic star Matt O’Riley out of his squad for EURO 2024 was the right one.
That’s according to Nicklas Bendtner, quoted by Tipsbladet, who believes that there was no need for the Celtic man to be a part of the squad despite everyone questioning the decision.
O’Riley was a surprise omission from the Denmark squad heading to Germany this summer, with Hjulmand instead opting to go with more experienced names who’ve featured under him in the past, such as Christian Eriksen.
That’s led to some controversy and questions being asked back in Denmark, with Thomas Gravesen publically questioning the decision to not focus on younger players and the future.
Since then, he’s made 121 appearances for the club and managed 27 goals and 34 assists, winning titles in Scotland and featuring in the Champions League.
Those numbers for the Hoops have not convinced his national team, or well Hjulmand, but unlike the masses, Bendtner can see why the Celtic star isn’t in the group.
“If you look at those who have been selected, they are more skilled,” he said.
“It is always a debate, but if we look at it in black and white. Did he have a chance to get in the game to get in? No. Then there is no reason to take him along.
“Although he had been extremely talented and might be a man for the future, and he is a young lad, and he will probably join the national team. I have no doubt about that. But at this point, it’s just not now.”
Bendtner also suggested the level of the Scottish Premiership won’t have helped the Celtic player: “Yes, it’s small.”
