When we covered Wolverhampton Wanderers’ agreement with Sporting for the transfer of Rui Patrício yesterday, we were pretty confident that it would be the last article about this saga.
But we were a little bit naive, forgetting the Portuguese press would have several stories about it today, some with the details from the deal. That’s the case of O Jogo.
The newspaper now shows the difference between the agreement that the clubs had found in May, with talks handled by former president Bruno de Carvalho, and now with Frederico Varandas in charge.
According to O Jogo, in May the clubs had agreed that Wolves would pay €18m for Patrício. Sporting would only get €9.85m, as €1m would go to the player, €3.15m to Jorge Mendes, and other €4m would be used by Sporting to pay a debt with the agent.
But Bruno de Carvalho made late demands, asking for €20m, and that’s when Wolves gave up on the deal and Patrício rescinded his contract with Sporting.
Now in this new agreement, Wolves pay €18m again, but Sporting actually get €14m. All they have to pay is Jorge Mendes’ €4m, as both the agent and the goalkeeper have given up on their parts this time.
That’s undoubtely great news for all involved, since Sporting, Wolverhampton, Rui Patrício and Jorge Mendes are all fine with each other, and the doors are open for any possible negotiation in the future.
