It seems Newcastle United continue to have a decent chance of signing Miguel Layun from FC Porto. That’s because out of the clubs keen on signing him, he’s already ruled one out.
On Thursday, Mexican outlet Univision reported that Monterrey made an offer to land the player, but it was turned down by Layun because it’s not his desire to leave Europe right now.
The news was confirmed by the club’s manager Antonio Mohamed, who said Monterrey are interested in the player, even though it’s a difficult signing.
All these updates are having some impact in the Portuguese press, as they expect Porto to sell the 28-year-old this summer. Newcastle United have been linked recently, and Rafael Benitez’s club could easily afford a deal.
Layun didn’t match the expectations after arriving on a €6m deal from Watford last summer, and now Porto want to recover that money.
Besides Newcastle, Roma, Espanyol and Sevilla all have been said to be in the race for the player.
