Around a week ago, we covered a claim from Spain which stated Newcastle United are prepared to pay around €30m to sign Kieran Trippier in the January transfer window.
It seemed just too much for the 31-year-old, and felt like it was all being pushed from an Atletico Madrid perspective. Trippier remains an important player for Diego Simeone, but he’s not quite as important as he was last season.
For various reasons, Trippier is now likelier to be sold than he was in the summer, when Atletico rejected advances from Manchester United.
Atletico have held a meeting with the player to find out what his intentions are for the second half of the campaign, and that will be key in what happens from here.
Should Trippier make it clear he wants out, then Newcastle’s €20m would be even more tempting.
