When it comes to missed opportunities, Nicolai Jörgensen failing to secure a move to Newcastle United in 2018 is a big one.

The forward was heavily linked with a move to St James Park two years ago, with numerous reports claiming that Newcastle were keen on his signature.

Indeed, at one stage Feyenoord even rejected an €18m bid, insisting they had no interest in selling the striker for that amount.

Eventually, everyone went their separate ways, and the rumours died down, with Jörgensen staying in the Netherlands and Newcastle turning their attention elsewhere.

Since then things have gone pretty badly for the striker, and back in October, we covered comments from Jan van Halst, who basically stated he felt sorry for the player amid his fall from grace.

That’s not a sentiment shared by Johan Derksen, who, during an appearance on the show Veronica Inside, was full of criticism for the 29-year-old.

“I think Feyenoord should stop with that boy,” he said, relayed by Voetbal Zone.

“This is not a temporary thing, that boy has not achieved anything for a few years. Only in the beginning did he have a good time.

“That boy will never be the same at Feyenoord; it is best to just sell him during the winter break.

“That (the Newcastle interest) has evaporated, you should be happy now if a club comes to take over Feyenoord’s salary.

“Then you should be happy; then he will be off the payroll. This will never work again; it is best to distance yourself from it.

“Gradually it becomes a bit of the laughing stock in the group. They don’t take him seriously anymore. You shouldn’t pull a dead horse; this is over.”
