It’s now getting hard to believe that Newcastle United were ever interested in signing Miguel Layún from FC Porto.
Although Newcastle appeared on a list of clubs who would like to sign the player this summer, the Portuguese media hasn’t been reporting any serious moves from them.
Recent updates have actually moved the player close to Mexican side Monterrey. First Layun reportedly rejected an offer, but the latest stories from Mexico claimed his agent has travelled to the country to negotiate again.
O Jogo have covered the story, and say that Layun would only return to his home country in case he doesn’t get any attractive offers from Europe.
No matter from which club, Premier League offers are always well seen in Portugal, especially because English clubs have the power to pay well, both in fees as in salaries.
So it’s unlikely that something from Newcastle United has arrived to the player, otherwise he wouldn’t even be considering going to Monterrey.
Porto paid €6m to take Layun from Watford last summer, and their plan is to at least recover that money when selling.
