Newcastle United sent their head scout Graham Carr to Sweden U21’s clash with Spain on Monday night, according to claims in the Swedish media. It’s been reported the focus was on Sunderland youngster Joel Asoro.
Expressen have reported Carr was in attendance to watch the 1-1 draw between Sweden and Spain in their UEFA U21 Championship qualifier. The objective was to watch Sweden’s Asoro, and according to Carr the 17-year-old impressed him.
The Newcastle United official said he realises the attacking midfielder plays for their arch rivals Sunderland, but he was impressed a lot with his performance. Arsenal’s Scandinavia scout Bobby Bennett was also at the game to watch the Sunderland starlet.
“He already plays for Sunderland, but I was impressed a lot yesterday,” said Carr.
Asoro made his debut for Sunderland this season when he was involved in the defeat to Middlesbrough, and became the youngest Swede to play in the Premier League.
The Swedish press believe everyone was there to watch Asoro, and they’re understandably very excited by the player, but a move to Newcastle would be difficult.
Sunderland would be loathe to sell to the Championship club, and may also be against the idea of a loan. Some of Europe’s biggest clubs have been linked with Asoro over the past few weeks, and his name is certainly rising through the European rumour mill.
