In the past few days, the Italian media had been naming Newcastle United as the main contenders for the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson, as the Magpies were said to be on the move for his signing.

On Thursday morning, Catalan outlet Mundo Deportivo showed up claiming there’s some competition for the player, as Barcelona reportedly want him and see him as a ‘low cost’ option.

As Italian outlet Calciomercato now covers these claims, we actually get to see some very weird statements about Newcastle’s chase for Ederson, as they claim it to be over.

At the end of their story about Barça’s pursuit, they claim the Magpies had indeed ‘materialised’ their interest in the player, but received a ‘sharp no’ from Atalanta.

It’s not clear when and how that rejection happened. We’re just pretty sure that in case that was a recent move from Newcastle, they would have a featured a full article just to say that.

Now we wonder whether that means the Magpies are no longer chasing the player, although we better wait and see what other outlets will say about this pursuit.
