In Rafael Benitez’s first few months as Newcastle United manager, the Magpies were relegated to the Championship in 2016 and a year later, they returned to the Premier League.
The manager has big plans for the club’s future, but feels he hasn’t had the backing required.
Benitez hasn’t been satisfied with transfer business and has continued to express his frustration with his side’s lack of activity this month.
A few days ago, the Spaniard admitted that he can’t confirm he’ll be in charge at St James’ Park following this campaign.
Benitez signed Salomon Rondon on loan from West Bromwich Albion last summer and the Venezuela striker’s goal was the difference against Manchester City as Pep Guardiola saw his side suffer a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle.
Following the match, Rondon gave an interview to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo and explained it would be disappointing if Benitez decides to leave the Premier League club.
“The fans love him very much. He stayed in spite of dropping to the Championship and got them back to the Premier League. They are very grateful,” he explained.
“It would be a pity if he decided to leave because he has done a fantastic job at Newcastle. I hope you reach an agreement with the owners of the club.”
When Rondon was further questioned on Benitez’s relationship with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, he said: “The same that is mentioned in the media.”
“There’s been differences, but it is not up to us, as players, to get into that question. What happens in the offices is not our responsibility.”
