After Genoa’s apparent interest in Newcastle’s Achraf Lazaar as a potential replacement for the seemingly departing Diego Laxalt, it was the Geordies’ turn to be interested in the Uruguayan left-back.
The news originally originated from Sky Italia, and has since been picked up by the rest of the Italian media, with Corriere dello Sport providing a quick update on the situation.
As tends to be the case, Newcastle aren’t the only club interested in Laxalt, with Atalanta also very keen on his services.
The Premier League interest is a bit of an annoyance for the Serie A outfit, who, for a while, had a clear run at the Genoa defender, and now they’re having to speed things up for fear of missing out on their target.
Of course, this could very well just be an agent tactic, mentioning an interest from Rafael Benitez’s side to move things along before the end of the transfer window.
Corriere explain Atalanta will have to close the deal this week if they want to ‘burn’ Newcastle, which we’re hoping is metaphorical and not literal.
What’s interesting, however, is that talk of Achraf Lazaar going the other way has all but disappeared, probably due to new interest from Turkey.
You’d think Newcastle would get rid of a left full-back/wing-back before signing another one, no?
