Newcastle United have been backed to make a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Steven Bergwijn this summer.
The Dutchman is expected to leave Tottenham before the end of the summer transfer window, having failed to establish himself since his arrival from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020.
The forward has managed just eight goals and ten assists in 83 games since that point and currently finds himself down the pecking order under Antonio Conte.
That’s led to talk of a move away this summer, with the player recently admitting he would be on the move.
Ajax are currently leading the race for his signature, having initially opened negotiations with Tottenham in January and retained their interest since then.
Indeed, it’s believed that talks could be at an advanced stage to take the player back to the Netherlands sooner rather than later.
There is also Premier League interest, though, and according to analyst Aad de Mos, Newcastle could be one of his suitors.
“I think Newcastle United, with all the money they have, are also a candidate for him,” Voetal 4 U report him saying.
“By the way, I also think they are trying to get Georginio Wijnaldum back. They also want to join Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.
“He is a substitute player at Tottenham, €30m was paid by Tottenham to PSV. Daniel Levy, the chairman, is a very difficult man to negotiate with.
“I think Ajax are divided as to whether to do it or not, and the danger is that you can fall behind the net for the umpteenth time.”
Now, all we have to do is wait for Newcastle to make their move, if Tottenham’s Bergwijn really is someone they see as ideal to bolster their squad.
