Manchester United are ‘very confident’ they can finalise a move for Mathijs de Ligt this week, although a medical is likely to be delayed.

That’s according to Fussball News, who say Manchester United believe they can ‘largely finalise the transfer’ with Bayern Munich at some point this week.

They report that talks with the German giants are currently ‘very constructive’ and offers are being exchanged between the various parties.

De Ligt signalled his willingness to join Manchester United early on and is even willing to forego part of his ‘lavish salary’, which is €15-16m per year, to make the move to Old Trafford happen.

Bayern want around €50m for the Dutchman, but United were initially thinking about a deal in the €40m range. There is a feeling that an agreement can be reached for €40m plus bonuses. Bayern would also hold a percentage on a future sale.

Manchester United and De Ligt have already come to an agreement and now the clubs need to do the same, but their positions are not so far apart that they cannot meet.

Bayern chief Max Eberl will push for the deal to be finalised as he needs money to come in to help fund purchases such as Jonathan Tah. Selling De Ligt would aid on that front, hence Manchester United’s confidence of a deal being struck soon.

The bigger question is when a medical will take place for the defender as he’s currently at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands. Any tests would have to wait until his participation in the tournament in Germany is over.

That’s a minor technicality in the matter, though, and it seems there is growing confidence all around De Ligt will end up at Manchester United this summer.
