With a lot of good work done in the past season by Erik ten Hag, the Manchester United manager will want the trend to continue next season, for which he will need new additions to his squad.

One of the glaring gaps is a natural striker, as the Wout Weghorst experiment failed to produce anything of note, with the Dutchman now set to return to Burnley.

Manchester United have been linked with a number of strikers of late, and few stories have been as persistent as the one leading to Victor Osimhen, which Gazzetta dello Sport carry on on Wednesday, where they also include Newcastle United.

The newspaper look at what the future could hold for the Nigeria international, with Napoli wanting to keep him around if they can.

The player has made it clear he’s happy in Naples, but also explained he has no idea what can happen in the next few months.

Therefore, if he ‘were to opt for permanence’, then the Serie A side would waste no time in getting him a renewal.

However, Napoli are also aware of all the interest in their star, including that of Manchester United and Newcastle United, as both clubs returned to Champions League football by finishing third and fourth in the Premier League respectively.

That adds extra weight to any offer they might make, but Gazzetta believe it’s the Red Devils who have some sort of head start compared to the Magpies.

They state Manchester United are ‘ahead of the others’ because they will play in the Champions League, unlike Chelsea, and ‘can count on the prestige of a glorious and winning tradition’, which Newcastle ‘does not have’.

That doesn’t mean Eddie Howe’s side are out of the race entirely, although whether they need Osimhen as badly as their Premier League rivals remains to be seen, having managed to get the best out of Alexander Isak towards the end of the campaign following his €70m transfer last summer.

As for the price, it’s said that €120m at the very least will be needed, and anything below that will not be entertained.
