Manchester City is one of Sergio Ramos’s ‘preferred destinations’ if he is to leave Real Madrid this summer.
That’s according to El Mundo, who says the Spaniard wants to either join Manchester City or PSG as they can guarantee him the money he is looking for.
Ramos’ contract with Real Madrid expires in the summer, and so far he has failed to reach an agreement with the club, who are looking to make wage cuts across the board.
As is usually the case with Ramos and contract renewals, that has led to a slew of transfer rumours, with the player linked to all the major European sides once again.
El Mundo cover the situation today and explain that Ramos is facing a ‘complex game’ because this renewal is dictated by circumstances, i.e., the club not having the money to give him what he wants.
Real president Florentino Pérez has other priorities than renewing the centre back, and some at the club believe it may be time to say goodbye to their influential captain.
In the last set of talks between Pérez and Ramos, the latter told the president that if the renewal offered was not on his terms; he would be leaving the club.
And while that conversation was not tense, those in the player’s entourage consider it to be a definitive rupture, and they are ‘pessimistic’ about him staying at the Bernabeu.
Thus, they, as well as Ramos, are looking at alternatives. So far they have not received an official offer from anyone, including Real Madrid, who are only willing to offer a one-year extension at this point.
Ramos doesn’t accept that as he believes he can earn what he wants elsewhere and his ‘preferred destinations’ would be either PSG and Manchester City. The reason? Money.
René, his brother who also acts as his agent, has already made an informal offer to the former as part of other talks with the club but so far nothing official.
Indeed, PSG’s sporting director Leonardo is said to be angry at his club being used to pressure Madrid.
Manchester City’s stance isn’t mentioned, but they are very likely to feel the same, especially given they have no need for Ramos at this point.
Ruben Dias has been excellent since his arrival in the summer, forming a superb partnership with John Stones at the heart of City’s defence.
Those two, coupled with Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake, mean the club don’t need a new centre back and certainly not an expensive one like Ramos.
Still, it seems the Spaniard would like the move to the Etihad if he can get it, although at the moment this feels like another attempt to put the pressure on the Bernabeu boardroom.
