Ajax have still not given up hope to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Steven Bergwijn in January.

On Friday, De Telegraaf journalist Mike Verweij stated the two best negotiators in Europe, the director of football the Amsterdam club, Marc Overmars, and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, are negotiating for the forward’s transfer.

De Telegraaf have a report focusing on a handful of Dutch players, who could change clubs before the transfer window closes on Monday.

Bergwijn is among them and regarding the 24-year-old, the newspaper explains Levy and Overmars are in ‘direct contact’ for the former PSV Eindhoven man.

The north London club’s chief initially wanted the same fee [€30m] they invested on the Netherlands international in January 2020, however, the asking price has now dropped to €25m.

After initially offering €18m, Overmars is ‘now prepared to offer’ around €22m. The two parties may have to ‘find each other somewhere halfway’, but ‘time is running out’.

Meanwhile, Ajax manager Erik ten Hag sees ‘absolute added value’ in the Spurs player’s ‘depth, pace, power and scoring ability’.

Ten Hag believes signing Bergwijn can ‘guarantee’ his side the championship this season. Ajax are currently leading the table with 48 points after 20 games, two points ahead of second place PSV and six ahead of Feyenoord, who are in the third spot.

The newspaper states: ‘Although he [Overmars] has booked a positive transfer result of 350 million euros (!) since his arrival ten years ago and he thinks he can eventually sell Bergwijn again with a profit, his leeway is small.’

Apart from convincing Levy, De Telegraaf state Overmars is facing two problems from Ajax CFO Susan Lenderink and the club’s supervisory board. The director of football needs to act fast if he wants to give Bergwijn to Ten Hag for the second half of the season.
