You’re probably aware of it by now, but Laurent Koscielny gave a very personal interview on Sunday about his injury, and how difficult it was for him to see France lift the World Cup without him this summer, knowing he should have been there with them.
The 33-year-old is currently recovering from an Achilles injury suffered in May, and is expected back sometime before the end of the calendar year, even if that can easily change depending on how things progress in the coming months.
In said interview, the Arsenal defender criticised the way some people ‘forgot’ about him during his injury, including Didier Deschamps.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of their Nations League game against Germany, the France manager was asked about the topic, who admitted being ‘surprised’ at what Koscielny said, and so were other staff members.
He said, relayed by L’Equipe: “They all sent messages support him. I called him after his injury. I discussed surgeon options with him, and invited him to be with us during the preparation for the World Cup. The letter he wrote was also a very important, strong moment. I made sure he could come to the final in the presidential plane.
“I thought it was really important for him to be there, not to say with a heavy heart, but nearly. There was the title. I asked after him in September, to see where he was. Since then, it’s true, he hasn’t heard from me. It’s been a month or so”.
Deschamps revealed he and Koscielny briefly spoke on Sunday evening, but, understandably, the France manager refused to reveal the details of the conversation.
