Following the many links with the Tottenham Hotspur job, Sporting manager Ruben Amorim was asked about that possibility in a press conference today.
Portuguese journalists asked him if there’s any chance he’ll move to Spurs and reunited with Pedro Porro (via Mais Futebol), who left the Lions for the London side in the January transfer window.
Amorim clearly didn’t want to feed the rumours about a move to Tottenham, claiming the only way he’d work with the fullback again is if he returns to Sporting.
“Obviously I really enjoyed working with Porro. It’s difficult for us to buy Porro, so I see it with difficulty. Porro made his choice, it’s normal, they are different championships,” said Ruben Amorim.
“He would also have more difficulties now, because Esgaio is doing very well, it would be a healthy fight between him and Esgaio to play at Sporting, it’s only in this aspect that I see the possibility of working with Porro again.”
“I don’t get phone calls. Who receives these calls, when he has to receive them, is Raul Costa, who is my agent. So I didn’t get more than usual. It was a good tie, but I don’t like talking about it either. It’s over. It was a championship game. We passed the qualifier, we were there on merit.
“It was a tie against a great club that is in first place. But a normal round of a competition in which we aim to go as far as possible.”
This is the first time Amorim gets to talk about the Tottenham rumours. When speaking of this story, the Portuguese press normally claims he’s very focused on his job at Sporting, and even wrote this week that the manager isn’t keen on working for Daniel Levy.
