Juan Mata’s two goals for Manchester United against Leicester City will have been somewhat tarnished by the following poor result, but it will surely help give the Spaniard some cheer during the busy seasonal schedule.

All around Europe the Premier League is looked to on Boxing Day and throughout the Christmas and New Year period, as it’s completely different from what is happening elsewhere.

Whereas in Spain and other countries players will get a week or so off to spend time with their family and maybe take a little holiday, in England it’s busier than ever, with matches coming one after the other.

Marca have spoken to a few Spaniards playing in the Premier League, and asked for their observations of the packed Christmas schedule.

Mata explained to the Spanish newspaper newspaper: “I’m used to it. The first year was difficult, but it doesn’t surprise me anymore. December arrives and you realise that in Spain you had a week of vacation and here, instead, you play more than ever. We have matches on 23rd, 26th, 30th, 1st, 5th.

“Physically it’s complicated and mentally too. If you lose you don’t have time to grieve and if you win there is no chance to celebrate.

“I cannot go to Spain, so the family has been coming for several years to live the festivities both in London and Manchester. It’s nice for them, especially for my cousins, who enjoy watching games.

“It serves to bring soccer closer to the fans, especially on Boxing Day. The stadium is filled with young children and a special atmosphere is created. The relationship between football and fans in England is fantastic. It is a recommendable experience.”

So, whilst it may be tiring for the Manchester United attacker, it certainly sounds like he’s making the most of the advantages the schedule does bring, and getting his family involved too.

Another goal or two against Burnley will certainly help.
