Whether you like it or not, it seems that David De Gea to Real Madrid is going to be one of the stories of the summer once again, with a few reports from Spain suggesting as much over the past month or so.

The arrival of José Mourinho at Old Trafford seemed to have put that story to bed, but with questions reportedly being asked about Keylor Navas at the Bernabeú, Florentino Pérez would be prepared to launch an assault to sign either De Gea or Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois once the season ends.

Of course, qualifying for the Champions League is undoubtedly going to be a factor, but with Manchester United so close to the top four and strong favourites to qualify via the Europa League, that might not be an issue come the summer.

Still, Calciomercato are reporting on Thursday the Red Devils are already trying to set up a contingency plan in case of a De Gea departure, and that plan is called Gianluigi Donnarumma, currently at AC Milan.

The 18-year-old is widely considered as the biggest goalkeeping talent in the world, and with his agent Mino Raiola now in Manchester United’s good books following last summer’s business deals, the link was near inevitable.

In fact, Calciomercato claim the super agent has already been in contact with the Red Devils, who are ‘ready to invest’ in Donnarumma, with a fee of €50m and a contract worth £50k/week for the player being reported.

However, the Italian website make it clear the 18-year-old will ‘always give his priority to the Rossoneri’, meaning that if Milan give him a similar offer, that’s where he’ll stay.

It’s worth pointing out that with a takeover from Chinese investors currently underway at AC Milan, money might not be an issue for the Serie A club come the summer.

If it goes through, that is.
