İlkay Gündoğan’s contract at Manchester City runs down in June and there’s still no clarity on where he will play next season.

Barcelona are showing interest in the 32-year-old. According to Jijantes, relayed by Sport, his signing is one of the deals the La Liga side are best placed to complete.

Pep Guardiola’s side would ‘like him to continue’ for one more season but are starting to believe that may not be possible. The Citizens ‘begin to give up’ on the midfielder.

The Germany international would fit into the plans of Xavi Hernández and also the Catalan club, as he can arrive for free and sign a two-year deal. Although the operation is on the right track, there is one aspect that needs to be sorted out to reach an agreement.

Barca want to insert a clause in the contract, which the Manchester City star ‘does not accept’. The ‘fair play’ issue has forced the Blaugrana to cover their backs.

The Spanish giants are going through a difficult financial situation and it could prevent them from registering new players next season. If this were to happen, the clause would allow them to send Gündoğan on loan to another team.

This hasn’t been accepted by the Manchester City player so far and it could ‘prevent the total agreement’ between him and Barca.

It’ll be interesting to see how this case develops in the coming weeks.
