Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian has urged the club’s fans not to become ‘obsessed’ with winning the Premier League.
The Reds have never won a Premier League title, with their last league success coming before the league’s birth in 1992.
Last year was the closest they have come to ending that dry spell as they finished a point behind champions Manchester City in one of the most thrilling title races of all time.
This season Liverpool find themselves top of the league and six points clear of City after 11 games, sparking hope that this may finally be their year.
Adrian is refusing to get caught up in that, though, and insists fans cannot put all of their focus on securing a league title.
“They are excited like we are, but you don’t have to become obsessed with winning the league so soon,” he told Mundo Deportivo.
“We want to lift it but we’re not going to give up the Champions League to do so. Anyone would want to have it back at Anfield.”
This weekend sees a monumental clash at the top of the table as Liverpool host Manchester City in their first meeting this season.
A win for Liverpool will send them nine points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side, handing them a huge advantage in this year’s title race.
The game could end up defining where the title goes, but Adrian is once again playing it cool, insisting that will not be the case.
“There are many months of competition left but it is a match that will have a certain impact,“ he added.
“They want to reduce that gap and we try to extend it. The more the better.
“But Christmas is hard this year, more so for us with the Club World Cup in between.
“The Premier League title is not decided in November.”
