Liverpool have joined the list of suitors for Napoli striker Dries Mertens as they will be on the hunt for a forward this summer.
That’s according to Tuttomercatoweb, who say the Reds are ready to offer the Belgian a three-year deal to tempt him to leave Napoli.
Mertens contract at the club expires this summer, and as yet, he has not signed a new deal, despite an offer being on the table for several months.
TMW explain that before the Coronavirus lockdown, Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis spoke personally with Mertens and put a two-year contract worth €5m a year on the table.
The latest of those are Liverpool, who have come forward ‘in recent days’ with them looking for a forward this summer.
According to the report, Jürgen Klopp plans to sell one of Divock Origi or Xherdan Shaqiri this summer and so they are looking for a forward who can play down the middle and on the wing.
Mertens is one such player, and there is a belief they could soon turn their interest into an official three-year offer.
At the moment the player is waiting, his ‘priority’ is to stay in Naples but the new interest from Liverpool, the European champions, could sway that thinking.
