A week ago Portuguese newspaper Record reported Leeds United want to sign Diogo Gonçalves from Benfica and he’s a ‘priority’ for the Championship club.
The claims came not long after Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani had hit out at Wolves and said his club will now look to get loans from big European clubs, so the timing perhaps suggested the story was being forced.
If the interest is true then Leeds United will be very impressed with how Gonçalves performed for Portugal’s U21 side on Friday night.
In a 7-0 victory over Liechtenstein, the 21 year old scored three times and added an assist.
The Portuguese media are raving about his performance, and Record give him 5 out of 5, a rare rating for the newspaper.
This probably all makes Leeds United’s task harder. If Benfica believe they can integrate Gonçalves into their team more next season and manage his value upwards then the Portuguese club won’t be too interested in any loan approaches.
