Once touted as a great talent in Ligue 1 when he was at Rennes, Joris Gnagnon was linked with a number of Premier League clubs.

In the end, he went to Sevilla, where his career never managed to take off, and he’s now been released from his contract for ‘lack of professionalism’.

This is the same player Sabri Lamouchi wanted desperately at Nottingham Forest when he was still in the job, but the deal fell through at the last minute.

Back in November 2020, the former Forest manager revealed to ABC Sevilla that Gnagnon had turned down the opportunity to move to City Ground in 2019, preferring to stay in Seville, only for him to then end up back on loan at his former club Rennes about 20 days later.

Well, it appears the Championship club dodged a massive bullet, because the La Liga club, for whom the player has appeared 17 times in three years, decided enough was enough and simply cut ties with the 24-year-old.

Diario De Sevilla state the Spanish side blamed a ‘lack of professionalism’ due to his ‘lack of discipline in having the minimal physical shape required as a professional of top competitions’.

Gnagnon and Ibrahim Amadou have both been training by themselves at Sevilla of late, but while the second kept up his fitness, it appears the former did not.

Diario De Sevilla explain that ever since he arrived from Rennes, the defender ‘showed overweight problems that he has not managed to improve, even with specific treatments and diets’.

As for Nottingham Forest in all this, they would have had to put up with these issues, and it seems Gnagnon’s decision to stay in Seville was a blessing in disguise for the City Ground club.
