Liverpool were strongly linked with a move for Athletic Bilbao’s Inaki Williams at the start of the year.

Williams had a release clause of €20m in his contract, but the Spanish forward signed a new contract at the La Liga club with a release clause of €50m.

The Merseyside club have again recently been linked to the 22-year-old, who has also been speaking to Spanish newspaper AS.

Asked about the interest from Liverpool, Williams insists he is content at Athletic Club Bilbao, and wants to stay for ‘many years’.

He said: “I am happy at Athletic, it is where I want to be. I am very grateful to the fans, the club and my colleagues. I want to stay for many years.”

Liverpool have plenty of attacking options at the club at the moment, and interest in Williams doesn’t make much sense.
Also, it’s certain Athletic Bilbao will demand the entire release clause of €50m for Williams, and that could also be a stumbling block in the future.
However, things could change if the Reds qualify for the Champions League next season.
