Heerenveen striker Sydney van Hooijdonk has hit back at criticism of Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst, as he continues to be likened to the forward.

The youngster has been speaking to ESPN in the Netherlands after a superb campaign in which he has scored 13 goals and registered one assists in 27 games in the Eredivisie.

He’s earning plenty of plaudits as a result, with many comparing him to Weghorst thanks to their similar stature and playing style.

The Netherlands international currently finds himself at Manchester United, having moved there on loan in the January transfer window as a temporary replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

He’s played a major role under Erik ten Hag since his arrival but has yet to make a significant impact, struggling to live up to the standards that are expected at Old Trafford.

It’s seen plenty of criticism from Manchester United fans and anyone else who has watched him, with some even going as far as to criticise his footballing ability.

Sydney van Hooijdonk is having none of that, though, hitting back at the criticism in a conversation with ESPN.

“I think he has become a good striker; I really respect how he has developed to this level,” he said.

“I’m getting a bit tired of the comment that he can’t play football well.

“Do you think that Erik ten Hag, one of the best trainers, would line him up so often if he couldn’t play football? Actually, just stupid nonsense from people.”
